Defoe guarantees goals. Great signing for them for the next 1.5 seasons he keeps them up Poyet will have some breathing space. Two seasons = circa 150 million revenue?

So Defoe fucked off to Toronto for a few extra bucks for just long enough to miss out in the world cup (though he still got pissy that he wasn't called up) and now comes back to play for a worse team than ones who wanted him this time last year?

Defoe was pretty desperate to get out of Toronto. That organisation is a shit fight at the moment. It's a LOT of money for Defoe, but he will be much more likely to keep them afloat as opposed to Altidore (who is allegedly going the other way). This gets Altidore off their books (and MLS are certainly the only ones who would take his contract) and replaces him with a proven striker. When you consider cost of relegation and Altidore's contract, it's a bit more understandable.

Do people realise that the reason for the length of the contract is to convince Defoe to join them? They're desperate and have to offer a huge incentive to try to get someone in to score the goals to make them safe.
Players have all the power these days and Defoe will have a great few years on the back of Sunderland's desperation.
